Flakes.FYI Procedural Art

Flayes.FYI was an experimental project aimed at producing a large volume of unique artworks through procedural design techniques (no AI). Inspired by the uniqueness of snowflakes, each piece in the series is one-of-a-kind.

Flake Varieties

I developed four flake "densities" that each fit into a 25x25x25 grid. Each flake began as a 3D maze, and was then mirrored over two axes and rendered in an isometric perspective to achieve the snowflake effect.

Branding

Sharing a name with its web address, Flakes.FYI originally launched as a digital gallery. I created an identity for the project, including a limited color palette which was incorporated into the final artwork. The logo's contrasting sharp and soft forms reflect the form language found in the artwork and communicate the light-hearted nature of the project. The minimalist snowflake mark hints at the structural similarity of every flake.

Final Artwork

The final artwork was achieved by layering multiple render passes. Ryan Peters and Eric Svitek assisted with coding to create randomized combinations of layers, which I curated to a total of 5,000 flakes.
